Why standard carpet sprays don't fix pet stains

Urine is made of uric acid crystals. Detergent-based sprays lift the visible stain but leave the crystals behind in the pile and underlay. Add moisture (a mop, a rug wash, humidity) and the crystals reactivate — that's why the smell keeps coming back.

The only reliable fix is an enzyme cleaner that breaks the crystals down at a molecular level, followed by extraction to pull them out of the pile.

DIY first response — fresh accidents

• Blot with plain white kitchen roll — never rub
• Rinse with cold water, then blot again until the paper comes up dry
• Apply an enzyme cleaner (Simple Solution, Urine-Off) and let it dwell 10 minutes
• Blot again, cover with dry paper, weigh it down with a book for 6 hours
• Never use bleach or ammonia — ammonia mimics urine and encourages repeat marking

Set-in stains and repeat spots

If the stain is more than 48 hours old, or if your dog keeps returning to the same spot, DIY has usually reached its limit. The urine has soaked into the underlay and possibly the floorboards — surface treatment won't reach it.

At this point professional hot-water extraction with a proper enzyme pre-treatment is the only route to genuinely remove the smell rather than mask it. We'll be honest before we start if a stain is likely to lift fully or just improve.
