When to clear gutters in South Yorkshire: an autumn checklist

The right window: late October to early December
Book too early and the trees drop everything the week after. Book after Christmas and the run has already overflowed through the wettest weeks. For most homes near trees, the best time is after the bulk of the leaves have fallen, usually from late October into early December.
Homes with no trees nearby are more flexible. Moss washed off the roof is their main blocker, and that builds up all year round.
Five checks you can do from the ground
- Stand across the road in heavy rain: water spilling over the front edge means a blockage
- Look for green streaks or dark patches on brickwork under joints
- Check whether the downpipe shoe is gurgling or dry while it's raining
- Plants growing out of the gutter mean compacted silt, not just leaves
- Look upstairs inside for damp patches on external walls after a wet week
