Why your oven still looks dirty after cleaning

You've scrubbed the oven for two hours (or paid someone else to). It still looks dirty. Almost every time in Barnsley, it comes down to one of six specific things — and only two of them are your fault.

1. The grime is between the door glass panels

Modern oven doors have 2–4 layers of glass. Grease creeps between them over time, so the door looks dirty even when the inside face is spotless. Wiping the outside does nothing — the door has to come off and be dismantled to reach the middle panels. This is the #1 reason a 'clean' oven still looks dirty in Barnsley homes.

2. The racks weren't dip-tank soaked

Carbonised grease on oven racks doesn't come off with a scrubbing pad — it's chemically bonded to the metal. A proper oven clean removes the racks and soaks them in a heated dip tank so the carbon lifts off. Without that step, the racks look grey and 'burnt' no matter how hard you scrub.

3. Caustic gel residue is still in the cavity

Cheap oven-clean sprays and pastes contain caustic soda. They lift surface grease but leave a chalky white residue behind that dulls the enamel and traps new grease. If the cavity looks hazy after cleaning, that's caustic residue — and it needs neutralising, not more scrubbing.

4. The extractor filter is untouched

The extractor filter above the oven traps grease and yellows the whole cooker area over time. Even a spotless oven still looks dirty if the extractor is clogged. Most people don't realise the filter comes out — it just clips down.

5. The fan cover wasn't removed

Behind the fan at the back of the oven, grease bakes onto the fan blade and the cover. The cover unscrews with two thumbscrews. Skipping it leaves visible baked-on grease every time you shine a light into the cavity.

6. It's not dirt — it's damaged enamel

If the cavity is discoloured after cleaning and no residue lifts off, the enamel itself has been damaged by repeated caustic cleaning. This is permanent — the only fix is a new oven.
